Resort-Inspired Space

Starting with a new-build blank slate, we designed a fully custom landscape that seamlessly ties into the home’s architecture and enhances everyday outdoor living. The centerpiece of the project is the pool, surrounded by an elegant Ivory Travertine pool deck that provides both durability and timeless style. Layered plantings and a tailored landscape plan bring depth and vibrancy, while custom lighting adds warmth, safety, and nighttime ambiance throughout the space. The result is a cohesive, resort-inspired backyard designed for relaxation, entertaining, and long-term enjoyment.

The Project

Key Features

Designing and building a space that flows naturally while creating distinct areas for use is essential to a successful outdoor environment. For this project, the client wanted three dedicated areas across the pool deck for entertaining: a dining space, a sun-lounging area, and a conversation zone. The layout also provides ample room for guests to comfortably move and gather throughout the space. During the design process, it’s important to consider the maximum number of people the area may host, ensuring functionality without crowding. Thoughtfully integrated landscape and lighting elements extend the usability of the space, allowing it to be enjoyed year-round.

An entrance sets the tone for the entire property. That initial “wow” factor when entering a space is critical. A well-lit walkway paired with a visually striking view into the backyard creates a welcoming and memorable first impression while seamlessly guiding guests into the outdoor living areas.

At Glen Allen Grounds, we design landscapes that are proportional to the size and scale of the home. Installing undersized plant material against a large structure can feel unbalanced and unfinished. Instead, we select plantings that are appropriately scaled at installation while allowing room for healthy growth—especially near foundations. Larger, denser plant material is strategically used to create privacy screens and define property boundaries.

Staggered pathway lighting along the bluestone walkway guides movement and improves visibility, creating a safer and more intuitive approach to the home after dark. This layered illumination is complemented by full uplighting on the home’s façade and mature trees, highlighting architectural details and natural textures while adding dimension and warmth. Together, these lighting elements create a balanced composition that enhances curb appeal, adds depth and contrast, and ensures the space feels welcoming, polished, and visually engaging both during the day and at night.

Most projects are designed around the location and orientation of the pool, where scale and proportion are again key considerations. The pool size was carefully selected to complement the home and meet the client’s lifestyle needs. A bird’s-eye view of this 16’ x 36’ pool highlights the 8’ tanning shelf and a 3’ swim lane designed for exercise. The waterline tile, plaster finish, and ivory travertine were chosen to coordinate seamlessly with both the interior and exterior architectural elements of the home.
